Tequila lovers, history lovers, foodies and off-the-beaten-path travelers, Tequila, Mexico is a great place for you!
Located just under two hours NW of Guadalajara, Mexico is the beautiful and historical city of Tequila, Mexico. The city is home to 25 different tequila distilleries many of which offer tours to educate tourists about the flavors, varieties and history of tequila. Here I’ll be sharing about two different tour experiences in the area and tips that will make your trip the best possible.
This post is all about Tequila, Mexico!
What is the city of tequila, mexico like?

The city of Tequila, Mexico is located within the Mexican state of Jalisco. The town itself is very walkable and filled with various distilleries. The fields that surround the city are filled with beautiful blue agave plants. The city the streets are cobblestoned and the pride from the various distilleries is palpable.
Tequila is full of restaurants and outdoor bars like the one pictured above. While visiting you should try the traditional cocktail, cantarito. The special thing about these cocktails is that they’re served in terracotta clay cups.

La Fortaleza is one of the oldest, still functioning, artisanal tequila distilleries in the world. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous with wide fields of gorgeous blue agave, the bright pink painted cave entrance and fantastic tour guides.
La Fortaleza still has their tahona, or volcanic stone wheel, used to crush the agave plant. The tour allows you to learn all about the history, the way they’ve modernized, the rebranding and many fun facts about their bottles. Each tequila bottle is truly a work of art. Artisans make these bottles by glassblowing. Local women paint and carve the corks to make them look like the heart of the agave (the piña).
The estate has a delicious food truck where you can get tacos and snacks after your tequila tasting experience.

If you drink tequila, you’re probably aware of Jose Cuervo. The most globally exported tequila in the world is Jose Cuervo. Here at the Cuervo estate you’ll be able to sample various tequilas, tour the compound and learn about the production process.
Of all of the distilleries in Tequila this, in my opinion is the most accessible. It’s an all encompassing tour of a company many know and love.
