How to Visit Tokyo’s Legendary Tuna Auction (+ Tickets!)

One of the most incredible experience that you can have in Tokyo is to visit the tuna auction.

The auction took place at the Tsukiji Market for 83 years. As of 2018, it now takes place at the Toyosu Market. Viewing the auction is interesting, but actually understanding what’s taking place, knowing where to go and what to see requires having a local guide who can educate you along the way.

This post is all about the tuna auction in Tokyo!

The man, the myth, the legend, fumi!

(disclaimer: this entire article was written without Fumi’s knowledge. I’m writing this post because of how much I genuinely loved my experience. I’d love to spread Fumi’s business to as many travelers as possible because of how kind he truly is.)

If you’re hoping to see the tuna auction, I highly recommend hiring Fumi. The first time I met Fumi was in April of 2024 and my experience with his tour and information was absolutely phenomenal. After deciding to go back to Japan with my family I immediately knew to book the tour with Fumi.

Fumi is incredibly intelligent, highly knowledgeable about anything and everything in Tokyo, kind and very detail oriented.

What’s Included in the Tour with Fumi:

4:30 AM: Fumi arranges to either meet you at the market or meet you at your hotel and travel with you to the market.

5:00 AM: Fumi gets you in the perfect spot to watch the auction and explain to you what is going to take place. Fumi has tons of laminated pages of information that is super helpful and interesting to learn about.

6:30 AM: Fumi has pre-reserved a reservation for breakfast sushi at a fantastic sushi restaurant in the Toyosu Market. Fumi will help you order, give recommendations for sake to pair with your sushi and he’ll wait outside the restaurant for you to finish dining.

The restaurant offers a tuna set that is so delicious we went back a second time during our trip.

7:30 AM (ish): Fumi will now give you a tour of the entire market. This includes tons of free food samples, information and the opportunity to meet different local vendors. We purchased miso, bonito flakes, kombu, different green teas and incredible Japanese treats.

Around 8:30-9:00 AM you’ll finish up your tour with Fumi. At this point you have a full day ahead of you in the beautiful city of Tokyo. This tour is such a fantastic way to start your day.

I also highly recommend that you book this for your first day after traveling to Tokyo. The jetlag will make waking up this early much easier. I do think it’s the perfect way to kick off your trip to Japan.
