Ferry to Helsinki from Tallinn: Everything You Need to Know!

ferry to helsinki from tallinn tickets

Taking the ferry to Helsinki from Tallinn is a unique, affordable and fun way to visit two amazing cities.

Since both countries (Finland and Estonia) are part of the European Union and the Schengen Area, so you can travel between countries without going through customs or passport control.

This post is all about the ferry to Helsinki from Tallinn!

What is the ferry like?

We took the Viking Line ferry and it was enormous, comfortable and felt more like a week-long cruise type of ship than a between city ferry.

There were comfortable seats, food and beverage options at a cafe, accessible outlets and free wifi.

If you’re someone who is concerned about getting seasick, I’d point out the size of the ship and the relatively calm sea. I also personally recommend ginger candies, black licorice and avoiding reading or using your cellphone while on the ship!

The first thing to figure out is if you’re looking for a day trip with a return ticket, round trip ticket for different days or if you’re looking for a one-way trip. Personally, we were looking for a budget friendly way to travel to a new country without having to take a flight so we decided to take a one-way ferry to Helsinki from Tallinn.

Duration:

The ferry takes around 2-2.5 hours from port to port. It is critical that you arrive and check-in at least 30-45 minutes prior to departure time depending on the ferry line you choose. Please check your booking to see what they specifically require.

When Does the Ferry Run?

The ferry runs year round including on holidays. In regards to when the ships run during the day, it depends upon which ferry line you choose. There are many different ferry lines between the two ports.
