The #1 Accommodation at the Ngorongoro Crater

The Highlands Camp by Asilia Africa, located on Tanzania’s Ngorongoro’s Crater, is one of my all-time favorite accommodations.

Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the singing of the traditional Swahili welcome song, “Jambo Bwana”.

While enjoying some refreshments, you will to speak with the personal staff member assigned to your group for the duration of your stay. The chef greets you and asks about food allergies and preferences.

This post is all about Ngorongoro and one of my favorite hotels in the world.

Rooms and accomodations

The staff carries your bags and will show you to your glamping-style accommodations. The rooms are located in the African bush, which requires you to walk with a member of their staff at all times. Each room is equipped with a walkie talkie. This allows you to call staff for an escort back to the communal areas.

The Highlands Camp relies on sustainable measures to care for the environment while also keeping you comfortable.

The wood burning fireplace keeps your warm during the chilly evenings. The staff lights the fire while you enjoy dinner. If the fire dwindles during the night you can ring the staff via walkie talkie and they will happily come to relight your fire. Solar panels, water recycling, and use of local ingredients further demonstrate their earth conscious mission. All while contributing to the magic of this accommodation.

amazing staff

During our stay, the staff’s attention to detail was outstanding.

Each night you will find a warm water bottle wrapped in soft fabric tucked under your thick comforter. This is a thoughtful touch that will keep you warm throughout the night.

Our staff member, Winston, made cocktails for us, served as our waiter during dining hours and joined us as we sat by the communal fireplace.

Dinner is divine, and always paired with wine offerings. There are multiple courses, complex flavors that use ingredients from the Karatu region and dishes that are curated to your needs and preferences. The staff will even prepare a gourmet breakfast or lunch box for you upon request. This will allow you to go on a morning game drive if you choose to do so.

The staff sang to us as we departed on our last day, and I got emotional. This is such a special place and it was so unique to connect with and foster relationships with the staff.

If you find yourself traveling in this part of the world I highly recommend making your way to the Ngorongoro Crater and staying in this exceptional accommodation.
