Kuang Si: Take a Dip in Luang Prabang’s Refreshing Waterfalls

The Kuang Si Waterfalls are a perfect way to beat the incredible heat in Luang Prabang, Laos. You can enjoy the shade from the lush greens, and take a dip in the refreshingly cold aqua waters of the waterfall.

In this article you’ll read about how to get there, the benefits of the water, cost, hours of operation and tips to enjoy the falls even more.

This post is all about Kuang Si.

The Kuang Si falls are located about 29 km or 18.5 miles (or about 1 hour) outside of Luang Prabang.

The three main ways to get there are via motorbike, shared van or tuk tuk. We took a tuk tuk and were very glad that we did. The price depends upon the number of people you’re traveling with and the bargaining with your driver! For two people, round-trip we paid around $25 USD total.

We ran into some friends while at the falls and they had taking the shared van. They told us that it drove around Luang Prabang for about an hour cramming more and more people into the van and they arrived feeling hot, sweaty and motion sick. Of course, this is the cheapest way to travel to the falls (between $6- $10 USD) for a round trip journey. That being said, they asked if they could join us in our tuk tuk on the ride back because the extra money, they felt, was worth it.

These limestone rock formations mean that the eroded mineral (calcium carbonate) attributes to the gorgeous, picture-perfect, color of the water. This water is also full of health benefits.

The minerality of the water specifically, calcium carbonate, magnesium and sodium, are medically known to reduce inflammation and improve blood circulation.

The high level of minerals causes additional buoyancy when swimming in the water. This can increase relaxation and overall therapeutic benefits – especially with joints.

Cost: Entrance to the Kuang Si Falls is 65,000 kip or about $3 USD. After purchasing your ticket, you’ll take a public shuttle bus to the falls.

Hours: The falls open at 8:00 AM and close at 5:30 PM. They’re open all 7 days of the week and during holidays.

What to Wear: I would recommend wearing something lightweight and breathable on top of your swimsuit. This allows you to swim in the beautiful falls without worrying about finding a place to change into your swim wear.

Best Time of Year to Visit: The dry season (December-April) is, in my opinion, the best time of year to visit the Kuang Si Falls. When it’s dryer, the water stays clearer and greener. During the rainy season rushing water with extra sediment makes the water cloudier and less vibrant in color.

Special Tips for Visiting Kuang Si

  1. I would highly recommend wearing shoes like tevas, chacos or keens that stay strapped onto your feet and give you traction on slippery rocks and in the water.
  2. Pack a lightweight, quick drying towel to dry off after swimming in the falls.
  3. Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated in the stifling heat.
