There is no shortage of incredible experiences to have in Iceland. Enjoy the various luxurious lagoons, hike the distinctive landscape, search for puffins, trek through ice caves and sample Icelandic rye bread.

Due to the geothermal activity in Iceland, Icelanders have learned to use this natural energy source as a green way to heat homes and greenhouses, keep streets free of ice and even bake the famous and delicious sweet Icelandic rye bread!
This post is all about Icelandic rye bread especially if you’re interested to bake bread in the ground.

the experience
Laugarvatn Fontana offers a unique experience where you can learn to bake traditional Icelandic rye bread in the ground. The guide will lead you to an area along Lake Laugarvatn where the temperature of the black sand rests around 212°F or 100°C (boiling point). You’ll be able to see little puddles of water boiling along your short walk!

The bread itself takes 24 hours to bake through due to the lower temperatures. During your experience you will bury the dough for the group attending the following day’s excursion. Then, with a shovel, your guide will unearth a perfectly baked loaf from the steaming black sand.

ENJOYING THE Icelandic RYE BREAD
Your guide will then lead you inside to try the warm, freshly baked, rye bread with Icelandic butter and smoked trout straight from Lake Laugarvatn!

This experience is only 30 minutes! It is very accessible, family friendly and relatively inexpensive.
