3 Reasons to Visit Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is located in southern Kenya, just north of its border with Tanzania.

This was the first National Park that I visited in Africa, and I was absolutely captivated.

To see hippopotamuses and elephants grazing in marshlands during golden hour is something you’ll never forget. Not that you’ll need it, but your camera roll will inevitably be flooded with these remarkable moments to ensure these memories will be everlasting.

The expansive flat terrain and marshes of Amboseli make it easier to spot wildlife. You’ll also see a wide variety of species gathering at their shared local watering holes.

This post is all about Amboseli National Park in Kenya.

What makes this National Park truly unique is its elephants.

Amboseli is home to the largest elephants in the world in both body and tusk size. These gentle giants command the National Park and travel in large herds with their babies in tow.

Our guide shared with us that elephants can be either “right-handed, or left-handed”, and the way to differentiate is based on which tusk is shorter – that’s their preferred side.

Vervet Monkeys

During downtime between the morning and afternoon game drives, we would spend hours watching the vervet monkeys play with one another.

Their human childlike behaviors were incredibly entertaining to watch: swinging through trees, tumbling on the ground, receiving piggyback rides from their parents and seemingly playing tag in the open space.

Amboseli attracts many types of tourists. Especially those looking to capture the famous wildlife photos with the striking snow capped Mount Kilimanjaro in the background.

Unfortunately, during my time there the visibility was low and we weren’t able to capture the iconic photo, however, our time didn’t feel compromised in the slightest. In fact it forced us to focus on the beauty in the foreground rather than being distracted by the background.

You should absolutely put Amboseli National Park on your travel bucket list!
